Keweenaw (2024)

Every fall, since moving to New Mexico in 2014, we have made the three day drive back to Ohio to visit family and friends. This year we decided to take a "small" detour and visit Copper Harbor, located at the tippy top of the northern peninsula of Michigan. Our goal, since the sun had reached solar maximum in its 11-year cycle, was to see the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights (which is much easier to spell).

Unfortunately, while we heard that there were awesome light shows the three nights before we arrived, and apparently several nights after we departed, our two night visit was northern light free. Oh well, Mother Nature isn't always as accommodating as we would like. That said, we did indeed enjoy our stay, especially the nighttime sky, which was darker and more beautiful than any nighttime sky we had ever seen before – and perhaps will ever see again.

Above two images would have made an awesome panorama - such a calm, pristine view.
