Ah Desserts, My Favorite Entree

A special friend of ours, whom I might add, is slowly warming up to Albert, has a mantra when it comes to desserts. You probably guessed it by now – it’s a simple one – always eat dessert first. When I was a small child, I was taught another, similar mantra – always eat the pie crust first, then eat the pie. No doubt both sayings were for the same reason – if you wait until later, you might be too full. While I seldom eat dessert first, to this day, I always (okay, just about always) eat the crust first.

More Thoughts on Dessert…

There are those that insist that, conversely to breakfast, dessert is the worst meal of the day. Those people, typically known as nutritionists, generally are referred to by other, less popular nomenclatures. To the best of my knowledge, I do not know any on a first name basis. Okay, kidding aside. Man cannot live on glazed old-fashioned donuts alone. If I could, I would. Trust me. There is a bakery just down the street that hands down makes THE best.

Like with all vises in life, the key is moderation. Moderation in frequency and moderation in portion size. Given there is three meals a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – three desserts a day seems appropriate.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not necessarily complaining. However, just as actors can get type casted, so too can the family cooks and bakers. Seems my desserts are so popular that I am now requested to bring a dessert to all family gatherings. I guess that is a sweet and sour compliment. Then again, it does depend somewhat on whose hosting the family gathering. To a lesser degree, it likewise depends on the occasion and the season. This is to say, if fresh rhubarb is available, yours truly is bringing his world famous rhubarb crisp.
